You were in a car, driving fast for a safe house. Francis had his eyes on the road, his knuckles were white from clutching the steering wheel. You sat in the passenger seat, trying and failing to fall asleep.
Matthew and Alfred were fast asleep in the back seat, luggage piled around them.
"Thank you Francis." You whispered, looking out the window.
He glanced at you, then reached into his pocket, pulling out a cigarette.
"It's nozing. A man 'as to protect zose 'e loves."
You blushed at his words, then crushed the little hope that had sprung up. Francis was probably just worried about Matthew being torn away from Alfred. After all, the boys were really good friends.
The next two hours were spent in silence. The boys sleeping and you and Francis awkwardly avoiding each others eyes.
After a little while more, Francis sighed and turned towards you slightly.
"I know zat you want to get to the safe 'ouse as quickly as possible." He paused, rubbing a hand tiredly over his eyes. "But can we stop for ze night?"
You could see how tired he was and nodded mutely. He turned of the main highway and headed for the nearest motel.
Luckily for you there was one room left in the nearest motel. You carried Alfred in, then Matthew as Francis payed for the room and then parked the car.
There were two beds and a bathroom.
You placed the boys in the bed farthest away from the door. (You were extremely paranoid at the moment. What kind of mother wouldn't when a crazy bastard was coming after her child.)
Francis came in and locked the door behind him. Flopping onto the unoccupied bed, he stared sleepily at you. You raised an eyebrow as he patted the mattress next to him.
"Ze children are sleeping zat one. You can't stay up all night on guard."
He sat up and tugged his shirt off. You blushed slightly and looked away. But you slid into bed next to him.
Francis wrapped his arms around your waist, pulling you against his chest. You squeaked, your blush growing.
"How come you're like this Francis?"
"Like what?" He mumbled against the side of your neck.
"Act so uncaring all the time, yet comfort people when they need it."
Silence. Francis shifted slightly, pulling you even closer. Then he sighed.
"Zat's just who I am ______."
He went silent again and after a while, his breathing evened out. It took you a few more minutes until you too were fast asleep.
Matthew and Alfred had woken up refreshed. And now they were talking non stop in the backseat.
Francis's left eyelid was twitching and his mouth was set in a hard line. You had your forehead pressed against your window, trying to ignore the beginnings of a headache.
"That's bullshit Mattie!! There ain't any shit like that!!"
"There is ass wipe!!"
"I ain't an ass wipe!! Shit brains!!"
"You're boz little shits!! Now shut up!!" Francis barked, his grip tightening on the steering wheel. You giggled slightly, too tired to care that he had yelled at your son.
There was silence in the back seat then.....
"Your dad's an ass Matt."
"Yeah? Well your mom's a..... um....." Matthew trailed off then swore.
"What's the matter Matt? Can't insult a girl?" Alfred taunted.
"Shut up Al, or I'll punch the rest of your teeth out."
Francis let out a relived sigh as they both fell silent.
An hour went by, by now you were in a small town. Francis pulled up to an apartment building, parking then turning to you.
You waited, Alfred and Matthew whisper arguing. Francis came back out of the Landlord's office and peeked his head into the car.
"Let's go, you take ze boys to our apartment. I'll unload everyzing."
You nodded and complied.
The boys ran around the small apartment, yelling at each other. You watched, slightly amused at their antics. Francis carried in bag after bag. After the last one had been brought in he locked the door securely.
"Is this really going to be safe?"
Francis nodded, looking around the apartment.
"It's all we can do against a man like Oliver."
You nodded an shuddered.
Because with a man like Oliver, there was only running. It was pointless to hide or try to fight him.
